The debate rages on, bottle water vs tap water. On the left side, you have bottled water, a multi billion dollar industry that has been built on the perception that is safer and tastier than tap. On the right side you have tap water, whose reputation has fallen in the eyes of the public.
As the two duke it out, you'll be pleased to know that the winner of this contest is ultimately you, the consumer as this contest reveals the best way to get clean, healthy drinking water on a daily basis.
A landmark study by the National Resource Defense Council, the NRDC, found that of the 103 brands of bottled water they evaluated, 70% were of good quality. But the other 30% were of suspect quality and were found to contain chemicals and bacteria that were below state and industry guidelines.
But that is not all they found. An evaluation revealed that state and FDA guidelines were weak at best were most certainly well below the EPA standards for tap water safety.
This is even more frightening when you consider that as much as 50% of the U.S population consume bottle water.
The NRDC found that between 60-70% of bottled water produced in America were exempted from FDA regulation because those brands were package and sold within the same state as they were produced. It is only when the water crosses state lines that the FDA rules would apply.
An investigation by ABC's 220/20 was also an eye-opener. They sent five bottles representing five national brands to be tested by a microbiologist at the University of Hampshire.
The microbiologist revealed that there was no difference between the bottled water and New York city tap water. As a matter of fact, the only thing that the ABC investigation proved was that in general, bottled water taste better than tap.
What Is Wrong With Tap
Over the past 10 years, numerous studies have found drugs in drinking water and rocket fuel, of all things. A landmark investigation by the Associated Press found a variety of medication such as antibiotics, sex hormones and cancer drugs in the water supply that serves 41 million homes across America. These drugs could cause a whole host of health problems in the future.
On top of that, there is another form of drinking water contaminants that have become a huge worry. There is microbiological material in water that is chlorine-resistant and therefore survives municipal water treatment.
Experts agree that microbiological matter is the most dangerous of drinking water contaminants because they can kill and kill fairly quickly if ingested via a glass of water.
